By mid-March, the Third Battle for Kharkov had seen the city mostly recaptured by the Germans after several vicious encounters between SS troopers from the “Das Reich” and “Leibstandarte” divisions and grimly defending Soviet infantrymen, tankers, and NKVD troops.
The final engagement took place on 15-16 March 1942, just east of the city, at the Tractor Works in Lossewo. The majority of Kharkov was in German hands, but an effective defense of Lossewo would allow many thousands of Soviet troops to escape from the encircling Germans. Six of the ten scenarios and the Campaign Game contained in this historical module focus on the engagements in and around the Tractor Works at Lossewo. These are played on the beautiful, snow-covered historically accurate map provided. Those six scenarios, plus four more on geomorphic boards, are a solid reflection of the broader fighting in and around Kharkov during the initial Soviet assault and the German counterstroke. These scenarios are predominantly combined arms affairs, focused on aggressive armored assaults and desperate rearguard actions. The Campaign Game is constructed similarly to Hatten in Flames, with the emphasis on playability, shorter campaign dates, and minimal special rules. Players should be able to move quickly from the box to the gaming table for either the scenarios or the campaign. The module includes additional counters for use in the Campaign Game. These include (among others) SS 5-4-8 and 4-6-8 squads, SS Assault Engineer 5-4-8 squads, and 6-2-8 NKVD squads; relevant half-squads, leaders, and machine guns; Burnt-Out Wreck counters; concealment counters; Location Control counters; and perimeter markers.
